About CARE4Suffolk

Care4Suffolk is a group of concerned Suffolk residents who oppose irresponsible rezoning. We value the quality of life we have in Suffolk, Virginia and want to preserve it. We understand growth and change are important, but we want to see the city grow and change in a responsible way by making sure the infrastructure is in place, including schools, roads, and public utilities, prior to rezoning and development. We also want to preserve our wetlands and the areas around our reservoirs, which serve as our drinking water, and a precious resource for all of Hampton Roads. In addition, we value the heritage of our agricultural community and support keeping suburban sprawl from encroaching on farm land.

How CARE4Suffolk started:

CARE4Suffolk is a community group that grew from a handful of concerned citizens living on Manning Road and the surrounding communities. We came together to oppose the rezoning the Ellis Farm on Manning Road. A developer is looking to rezone about 114 acres of wooded and farmed land that is zoned agricultural to residential so he can build up to 300 homes on this land which is adjacent to the protected wetlands of Speight’s Run Reservoir.

Members of CARE4Suffolk have many reasons for opposing this rezoning, including: traffic, school impacts, environmental concerns, quality of life, property values, and the direct impact this large development will have on the lives of those that reside on Manning Road and the surrounding communities.

The Ellis Farm rezoning request is not currently on the Planning Commission agenda, however, we are diligently watching for it to appear again and we are ready to fight to oppose this rezoning.

Since CARE4SUffolk began its efforts, we have been met by Suffolk residents in other areas of the city with similar concerns about rezoning in their neighborhood. We are partnering with other groups of citizens to help them fend off irresponsible rezoning.
